Ben Phiri: I did my best

Malawi President Peter Mutharika’s long-time Special Adviser and Assistant, Ben Phiri, who resigned from his position this week, says he will do nothing more than what he already did.
The former presidential top aide said on Tuesday he had stepped down from his position to pave the way for people who have been accusing him of corruption to prove their case.

But in a twist of events, State House through director of State Residences Peter Mukhito rejected his resignation letter, citing typing errors.
Phiri’s resignation letter indicated that he would resign effective June 1, 2105, apparently he wanted to write June 1 2015.
Mukhito said State House had given him back the letter and “if indeed he was serious about resigning,” he should write a fresh letter without errors.
However, when contacted yesterday for his reaction, Phiri said he was not ready to discuss the matter further.
“I did what I did [to write the resignation letter] and I am no longer talking to the press on the matter,” he said before cutting the line.
Phiri’s resignation comes at a time when several presidential aides have left State House. Among them, former ADC Lieutenant Colonel Fostino Gunda-Phiri and former press secretary Frederick Ndala.
